Following my impassioned speech at the Winterspell town hall, business started to pick up. Some regulars started coming around again, and my offer of a free candle to anyone interested also seemed to be working. It was a slow but steady trickling back to normalcy. At least it was enough to keep the lights on and make payroll.

Perhaps the most promising new development was that Evan’s sentry friend managed to get word to Warden Quinton that her aid was required in Winterspell, and she would be coming the week before Thanksgiving. With our opportunity finally in sight, Selene and I redoubled our efforts to gather as much information as we could to take to the warden.

Which meant taking one final crack at Aunt Lavender’s bungalow. “There’s nothing here, Cora. We’ve already gone over this house with a fine-toothed comb,” Selene griped.

“Well, there could be something that we missed, Selene.” I wiped the back of my forearm across my forehead, likely leaving a smudge across my skin. I was covered in a thin film of grime composed of my own sweat and the plethora of dust I’d stirred up after an evening spent in the cramped attic.

We had looked through the attic once before, back at the beginning of our search for clues, but we both admitted it had been more of a cursory glance around, seeing as most of the attic was coated in a thick layer of dust didn’t seem to have been touched in months, maybe years. Since we originally thought we were looking for Lavender’s more recent research, we’d written off the abandoned mess in the attic, only now we weren’t so sure. If Lavender’s interest in the Golden Lotus went back further than the past few months, only to be revived by Obin’s tome, it meant we needed to dig even deeper.

“I think that yet again we are on a wild goose chase,” Selene opined, her ears pinned back as she tossed a disgusted look around the room. “If we didn’t find anything the first two hundred times we searched this place, then do you really think we’re going to find a gosh darn thing the two hundred and first?”

I sighed, picking up a heavy leather-bound tome written in a language I didn’t understand. I rifled through the pages, and as usual, a group of Lavender’s handwritten notes fell out.

“This is what’s taking us so long,” I muttered, collecting the scraps of paper. “Checking every one of these notes.”

I held the first scrap up to the light coming from an exposed bulb hanging in the center of the room. “Let’s see what we’ve got … eggs, milk, sugar, salt—” I sighed. “This is a popover recipe.”

“Oh, good grief,” Selene muttered.

I flipped through the rest of the book and found another stash of notes. I was prepared to cast them aside, like the handwritten recipe, only to jolt upright. “Selene!”

“What?”

“Look at this drawing,” I said, setting aside the book to focus on the paper in my hands.
